About Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is simply therapy in a relaxed state. We have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. Your conscious mind is working when you are thinking 'consciously' about something.
Your unconscious mind has all the information you are not aware of consciously....for example if I were to ask you to think of your phone number or where you went on holiday last year you would have to bring that information into your conscious mind - your awareness. Until you brought it to your conscious mind it was in your unconscious mind. Its as simple as that.
Change can only happen on an unconscious level. Thats why you can announce that you are going to quit smoking but that does not necessarily mean that you will. It is a conscious decision and something as habitual as smoking needs to be changed on a deeper level.
This is why it is useful to access the unconscious mind through deep relaxation where the suggestion to become a non smoker will be taken on board without the conscious mind interfering and sabotaging the intention.

FAQ about Hypnosis
What will it feel like to be hypnotised?
Being hypnotised is sometimes referred to as being in a trance. We all experience being in a trance at some time during our ordinary day to day activities. When we are engrossed in a t.v program for example, we are oblivious to what is going on around us and totally focused on the screen. Being in a light trance for the purpose of therapy feels like a very relaxed state, similar to how you feel in the morning when you first wake up or last thing at night before you fall asleep.
I have seen people being hypnotised on television and they do silly things....can you make me do things like that?
No one can make you do anything you dont want to during a hypnotherapy session. You are in control of your mind at all times. The therapist will guide you to visualise helpful things in order to achieve the result you want from the session. At no time would you do anything you wouldn't normally do in your waking life. The type of people who participate in hypnotist stage shows would do crazy things in their normal life anyway.
Will I be asleep when I am hypnotised?
No - you will not be asleep, you will just be in a very relaxed state. Many people dont believe they have been hypnotised after a session and that is because of the common misconception about what it means to be in a trance.
Will I be able to wake up from the trance?
You can 'wake up' anytime you want to - anytime you want to bring your awareness back to the room you can. We go into daydreaming states all the time in our waking lives - hypnosis is no different. Hypnosis and visualisation is simply following the therapist's instructions in your mind - you can choose to do this or not to do this - you have control of your mind all times.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Some people find it easier to relax than others. Hypnosis is really about following instructions and some people can do it more easily than others - but everyone can follow instructions if they choose to.
